Lukshmi Vilas Palace

Vadodara, Gujarat, India

The palace is one of the world’s largest private residences.

British architects built the grand palace using Indo-Saracenic and Indo-Gothic architectural styles during the 1880s and ‘90s.

LVP Banquets is one of Gujarat’s best event venues.
A stunning blend of Gothic, Mughal, Maratha, Rajput, and East Indian styles, the palace is adorned with Agra sandstone, Carrara marble, Murano mosaics, and commissioned artworks. Landscaped by William Goldring, the grounds feature sculptures by Augusto Felici, expansive lawns, and a unique quatrefoil-shaped pond. Italian marble floors, stained glass, and art-filled courtyards complete the opulent setting.

History

Maharaja Sayajirao Gaekwad III commissioned Lakshmi Vilas Palace, a masterpiece of Indo-Saracenic architecture. Envisioned by Major Charles Mant, whose diverse style is evident in a watercolour design held by the Victoria & Albert Museum, construction began in 1880. Concluded a decade later by British architect Robert Fellowes Chisholm, the palace stands as a testament to the regal aspirations of its patron.

Navlakhi Vav

The Navlakhi Vav, a historic L-shaped stepwell on the Lukshmi Vilas Palace estate, dates back to 1405 A.D. Named for the nine lakh gold coins spent on its construction, it served as a water source for centuries. It was restored in the late 19th century under Maharaja Sayajirao III to supply drinking water to the palace.
