The Idar Princely State was ruled by Rathore Rajputs, originally from Jodhpur-Marwar. Covering about 4300 sq km, the Maharaja of Idar was entitled to a 15 gun salute. The second son of H.H Maharaja Saheb Dowlat Singhji of Idar, younger brother of H.H. Maharaja Himmat Singhji for whom the city of Himmatnagar is named, Maharaj Saheb Bhahadur Mann Singhji of Jaswantgarh, Idar State, built Dowlat Vilas Palace in the 1920s and1930s. His son, Captain Maharaj Shri Umeg Singhji Sahib, of Jaswantgarh, received President’s HG & CD Medal for Distinguished Service, HG & CD Medal for Meritorious Service, Samar Seva Star (1967), Paschimi Star (1971), Sangram Medal (1973), Gujarat Chief Minister”s Medal, Indian Independence (1948), 25th Independence Anniversary (1972), Defence (1945), War (1945), India Service (1945), Silver Jubilee (1935), Coron (1937), and Idar State George V Silver Jubilee (1935) medals. |

The Dowlat Villas Palace, along with its adjoining structures, has a distinctive scorpion shape and architectural features inspired by an English castle visited by Maharaj Mann Singhji. This scorpion structure is apparent when one gets a bird eye view. The Dowlat Villas Palace consists of the central portion which included the face, body and sting of the scorpion. The front galleries on the either sides of Dowlat Villas Palace, are connected to buildings shaped like the claws of the scorpion. The galleries at the back on either side of the Dowlat Villas Palace are connected to the buildings representing the hind legs of the scorpion. The central portion is now the residence and offers heritage homestay facilities. |

It also has the important Buddhist site of Devni Mori which was inundated by dam waters- the relics from here are housed in a museum. Polo Ruins: The forests of Polo near Idar hold remains of architecturally interesting Jain and Hindu temples. |
